The Serie A 1960/61 was the 29th season in the top Italian football -Spielklasse of Lords. It began on September 25, 1960 and ended on June 4, 1961. As promoters, AC Turin , Calcio Lecco and Catania Calcio from Serie B were added.
The season as champions ended Juventus Turin , which qualified for the European Cup and was able to repeat its previous year's triumph.
The championship decision was very controversial, however, because on April 16, 1961 there was a Derby d'Italia against Inter Milan at the Stadio Communale , which should bring a preliminary decision in the championship fight . After a post shot by the Milanese, the crowd at the crowded stadium rioted, which caused the referee to abandon the game. The victory was awarded to Inter, the visiting team, and the Milanese took the lead. But after an objection from Juventus, the association decided on June 3, 1961, one day before the end of the championship, to have the game repeated. This decision is particularly explosive because Umberto Agnelli was president of both Juventus Turin and the Italian Football Association at the time. Inters President Angelo Moratti was so angry about this that he decided to let Inter's youth team play the game. Juventus won the game 9-1 and thus the title.
AC Milan , Inter Milan and AS Roma qualified for the Exhibition Cities Cup . ACF Fiorentina secured participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup of the following year through Coppa Italia . Relegated to Serie B had the AS Bari , AC Napoli and Lazio .
