Carlo Mattrel (born April 14, 1937 in Turin , † September 25, 1976 in front ) was an Italian football goalkeeper. The long-time player from Juventus Turin took part in the 1962 World Cup in Chile with the national team of his home country .

Career

Club career

Carlo Mattrel was born on April 14, 1937 in Turin , northern Italy , and began playing football in the youth of Juventus . 1955 found Mattrel admission to the first team of Juventus. After he had been in his first year without use, the young keeper for the season 1956/57 became the fourth division US Anconitana awarded, where he became a regular player with 33 of 34 possible league games a significant proportion to the rise in the Series C returned.

In the following four years from 1957 to 1961, Mattrel made 72 league games wearing Juventus' jersey. Under the Yugoslav coach Ljubiša Broćić , he ousted the long-time goalkeeper Giovanni Viola and Giuseppe Vavassori in his first season after his return and won Serie A in 1957/58 by eight points over Fiorentina . After AC Milan became champions the following year , Mattrel got his second Scudetto as a player from Juventus Turin in the 1959/60 season . That year the Fiorentina was relegated to second place, again with an eight point lead. The year before they had also been successful in the Coppa Italia , with Carlo Mattrel in goal, the team around players like Giampiero Boniperti , John Charles or Omar Sívori defeated Inter Milan 4-1 in the final . In the year of the championship of 1960 Juventus Turin reached the final of the Coppa Italia as defending champion again. Against Fiorentina they could just about 3-2 prevail after extra time. However, the goal was guarded by Vavassori again in this final. In general, Carlo Mattrel lost his position as the first goalkeeper of Juventus Turin again to Giuseppe Vavassori, who also made the clear majority of the championship games in the third championship season 1960/61 .

For this reason, Mattrel was awarded to the newly promoted US Palermo for the season 1961/62 . With strong performances, he not only had a large share in the sovereign relegation of the Sicilians, but also played his way into the circle of national goalkeepers. Then Juventus brought him back, where he was only used sporadically. In the next three years, Mattrel only guarded the goal of today's record champions 21 times in a league game.

In the summer of 1965 Carlo Mattrel left Juventus Turin for good and joined the up-and-coming Sardinian first division club US Cagliari , where he was under contract for two years until 1967 and during this time came to 25 appearances in the league. After he had also lost his regular place in Cagliari , Mattrel switched employers again in 1967 and subsequently stood in goal for SPAL Ferrara for another year . But even there he was only used eight times in the league. In the summer of 1968, Carlo Mattrel finally ended his playing career at the age of 31. After eight years of football retirement, Carlo Mattrel died on September 25, 1976 at the hospital in Front at the age of 39 as a result of a car accident.

National team

In 1962, Carlo Mattrel made a total of two international matches for the Italian national soccer team. The goalkeeper was appointed by the two national coaches Paolo Mazza and Giovanni Ferrari for the South European squad for the 1962 World Cup in Chile . As one of three goalkeepers, Mattrel was only used in the second group game against Chile . In the so-called Battle of Santiago Mattrel had to accept two goals, while his Chilean counterpart Misael Escuti remained clean . The 2-0 defeat against the hosts meant the early tournament for the Italians. In the last, meaningless game against Switzerland , Lorenzo Buffon again guarded the Italian goal.
