Giovanni Viola (born June 20, 1926 in San Benigno Canavese , Italy , † July 7, 2008 ) was an Italian football player in the position of goalkeeper .
Career
In the club
Giovanni Viola began his career at Juventus Turin , for which he already played in the youth department. He made his professional debut on February 10, 1946, at the age of 19, in a 2-0 win against Atalanta Bergamo . Between 1946 and 1949, Viola was at various smaller clubs, first in the series B and later in the Serie A on loan. For the 1949/50 season he returned to Juve to take over from Lucidio Sentimenti . Viola won three Italian championships with Juventus , although he was only used once in the last 1957/58 because Carlo Mattrel was given preference by coach Ljubiša Broćić . The season 1958/59 the goalkeeper spent at Brescia Calcio in Serie B, after which he ended his professional career. He later worked for many years as a coach in the youth department of Juventus Turin.
In the national team
After four B-internationals 1949-1950 Giovanni Viola was to have played without a senior international, national coach Lajos Czeizler in the squad of the Azzurri for the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland called. In the play-off of Group 4, which Italy lost 4-1 to the hosts , he made his debut for the senior national team on June 23, 1954 . By 1956 Viola completed a total of eleven international matches for the Squadra Azzurra .
