history

The club was founded in 1905 as Lucca Football Club and took part in the Prima Categoria Toscana in the first few years after it was founded . In the 1920s the club was active in the Seconda Divisione and Prima Divisione Nord , in 1930 the team was able to qualify for the first time for the Serie B as the winner of the Girone A of the Prima Divisione . In 1924, the club changed its name for the first time when it was renamed Unione Sportiva Lucchese Libertas . After a year in Serie B, the team fell back one league step after missing relegation and then went back to the Prima Divisione for three years in a row. By winning the Girone C in the 1933/34 season, the Tuscan team achieved the promotion for the second highest Italian division and, two years later, rose to Serie A for the first time in the club's history after winning the Serie B championship . The 1936/37 season was finished tied with Ambrosiana Inter in seventh place, which meant the best placement in the club's history.

After relegation could be ensured in the following season, the team had to go back to Serie B in 1939 as bottom of the table. Three years later the next setback followed with the fall in the third-class Serie C and the club was temporarily suspended from play. After the resumption of league operations in 1945, the team managed to return immediately to the second division after a year in Serie C and in 1947 even qualified for Serie A a year later. The greatest success was achieved in the 1948/49 season , when Lucchese reached 8th place in the championship, tied with Fiorentina and US Triestina .

In 1952, the club rose again after five years in Serie A and was immediately passed through to Serie C the following year. The Tuscan team could not stop the downward trend for the time being and fell into the fourth division in 1954. Many years in the third and fourth leagues followed. Between 1961 and 1963, the club advanced again to Serie B and spent almost 30 years in the Italian third division until they were promoted to the second division in 1990.

During this time, Lucchese made changes to the legal form . In 1969, the association was named US Lucchese Libertas Spa , ten years later those responsible decided to change the legal form of the association again, whereupon the association was named US Lucchese Libertas Srl . 1983 followed with the change from Unione Sportiva "to Associazione Sportiva, the de facto second name change to AS Lucchese Libertas Srl. In the 1990s the team at least approximately managed to build on the earlier successes and remained a total of nine years in a row until relegation in 1999 represented in series B. At the beginning of the new millennium, Lucchese held steadily in series C1, but could not record any notable successes.

In the 2007/08 season, the club's financial difficulties became known and the club had to file for bankruptcy. The president Giuliano Giuliani continued the club after the re-establishment in the following year and resumed the game under the name Sporting Lucchese . The team competed in the Series D . Lucchese managed to return to the fourth-highest division by winning the Girone E in the 2008/09 season. After the club had regained its original name, succeeded in the 2009/10 season as the winner of the Girone B of the fourth-class Lega Pro Seconda Divisione, the second promotion in a row.

In 2019 the club was re-established as Società Sportiva Dilettantistica Lucchese in 1905 and plays in Serie D (fourth division).
