Aldo Olivieri (born October 2, 1910 in San Michele Extra, Verona , † April 5, 2001 in Lido di Camaiore (LU) ) was an Italian football player and coach .

Olivieri was a goalkeeper and won the World Cup with Italy in 1938 . Although he is no longer as well known as goalkeeping legends Giampiero Combi and Dino Zoff , he is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the history of Italian football.

Before his death in 2001, Olivieri was, along with Pietro Rava , the last surviving world champion from 1938.

Career

In the club

Aldo Olivieri made his Serie B debut for Hellas Verona , the club in his hometown, in the 1930/31 season . For the 1933/34 season he moved to Serie A to Calcio Padova . However, he only came to eight missions there because he broke his skull in a collision with an enemy attacker in December 1933 .

After almost a year injury break and against the advice of his doctors, he ran again in 1934/35 and played for AS Lucchese Libertas in Serie B. In the following years he developed into one of the best goalkeepers in Italy, in 1935/36 he rose with Lucchese in Serie A.

For the 1938/39 season Aldo Olivieri moved to AC Turin , where he played under coach Ernő Erbstein . He knew Olivieri's calm, introverted character and at the same time particularly appreciated his great courage when running out of the gate. These strengths later earned him the nickname Ragno Nero ( black spider ). When Toro Aldo Olivieri graduated in seven seasons total of 172 matches.

At the end of the 1942/43 season he ended his professional career at Brescia Calcio . In 1944, he was still running for the Veronese club Audace San Michele Extra in the Series D on.

In the national team

Aldo Olivieri recommended himself during his time at Lucchese-Libertas with good performances for the national team and made his debut on November 15, 1936 at 2-2 in Germany under coach Vittorio Pozzo for the Azzurri . At the 1938 World Cup in France , Olivieri was a regular goalkeeper and played all four games. With a 4-2 win in the final against Hungary he was finally able to celebrate the world title with the Squadra Azzurra . Olivieri played his last international match on May 5, 1940, again against Germany. In the total of 24 games in which Olivieri guarded the goal of the Azzurri , they achieved 18 wins, five draws and suffered only one defeat.

After the Second World War , Aldo Olivieri worked as a trainer and worked a. a. quite successful at Inter Milan and Juventus Turin .
