Gino Colaussi (originally Luigi Colàusig ; born March 4, 1914 in Gradisca d'Isonzo , Austria-Hungary ; † July 27, 1991 in Opicina , Italy ) was an Italian football player .

During his active career he played as a left winger , his greatest strengths being his speed and great shooting power.

Together with his companions Nereo Rocco and Piero Pasinati , he is still considered one of the greatest football legends in Trieste . In today's stadium of his US Triestina , the Stadio Nereo Rocco , the grandstand is named after him.

Career

In the club

Gino Colaussi began his career with US Triestina . At a young age he had to ride an old bike from his hometown to Trieste in order to take part in the training. Because of its great football skills he made his debut in the season 1930/31 under the Hungary István Tóth , aged just 16, in 1: 6 against the AGC Bologna in Serie A . In the following ten seasons Colaussi completed 275 games for Triestina, in which he scored 47 goals.

In the summer of 1940 Colaussi moved to Juventus Turin , where he played for two years. At Juve , however, he was unable to meet the high expectations that fans and press had in him. A journalist even described him as “Colaussi is already a squeezed lemon.” In Turin he scored seven goals in 47 games and was able to celebrate his only success at club level in the 1941/42 season by winning the Coppa Italia .

In the 1942/43 season Gino Colaussi played for ACIVI Vicenza , after which the Second World War interrupted his career. After the war he tried a fresh start at Calcio Padova in Serie B. However, this was disappointing, so he ended his career there after a year.

After his career ended, Colaussi tried to gain a foothold as a coach, but was unsuccessful.

In the national team

Gino Colaussi celebrated the greatest success of his career with the national team . Under coach Vittorio Pozzo he became world champion in France in 1938 . In the 4-2 win against Hungary in the final , he scored two of his four tournament goals.

Colaussi completed a total of 26 international matches for Italy between 1935 and 1940, scoring 15 goals.
