Opicina (also Villa Opicina ; Slovene Opčine , German Optschinach ; during fascism Poggioreale del Carso ) is a fraction of the Italian municipality ( comune ) Trieste in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region , the city of Trieste is about 4 km south. The suburb is on the edge of the karst plateau directly on the border with Slovenia . The population is characterized by a larger minority of Slovenes .

history

Obelisk dedicated to Francis I.

The name Opicina comes from the Celtic and means rock . Opicina was mentioned for the first time under the name Optchena in documents from 1308. Originally with a rather rural character, the village developed into a trading and handicraft center at the beginning of the 20th century.

Today Opicina is an important traffic junction: this is where the road to Ljubljana in Slovenia and to Rijeka in Croatia begins . This village was developed by rail in 1857 from the Spielfeld-Straß-Trieste railway (connection Vienna-Trieste) and in 1906 from the Nova Gorica - Trieste CM karst railway .

Attractions

The train to Opicina in Piazza Oberdan in Trieste
  • Railway line Trieste-Opicina : Opicina is best known for the historically significant and technically exceptional, partly as a cable railway operated local railway , which was opened in 1902 and connects the center of Opicina with Piazza Oberdan in Trieste. Originally it was of central importance for the development of the hinterland of Trieste. In 1913, for example, the railway carried 459,000 passengers, a large part of which belonged to the local population. Today it has lost its importance as an important means of transport for the local population and is now more dependent on high subsidies as a tourist attraction. Still valued by the Trieste people, it is sung about in numerous Italian and Slovenian folk songs.
  • Opicina Obelisk : This column was erected in 1830 on the outskirts of the village to commemorate the visit of Emperor Franz I of Austria and to commemorate the opening of the connecting road from Trieste to the Austrian hinterland. From the obelisk you can enjoy the view over the Gulf of Trieste and the port facilities of the city, while in the distance you can follow the coast to Muggia and Istria .
