Ivan Vidav [ ˈiʋan ʋiˈdau̯ ] (born January 17, 1918 in Opicina near Trieste , Austria-Hungary ; † October 6, 2015 ) was a Yugoslav mathematician .

Life

Vidav began studying mathematics at the University of Ljubljana in 1937 and received his doctorate in 1941 with the dissertation Kleinovi teoremi v teoriji linearnih diferencialnih enačb (German: Klein's theorems in the theory of linear differential equations) with Josip Plemelj . In 1949 he was appointed assistant professor there and in 1953 professor. Since 1985 he has been emeritus.

Vidav's main areas of work were functional analysis and algebra . In 1956 he proved a theorem that characterizes the C * algebras among all Banach algebras ; this was later expanded by Theodore W. Palmer and is therefore known today under the name of Vidav-Palmer's sentence .

For his textbooks Višja Matematika (Higher Mathematics) I and II , he received the Prešeren Prize (Slovenian Culture Prize) in 1952 . In 1958 he was elected a corresponding member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and in 1962 a full member. In 1992 Vidav was awarded the State Prize for Lifetime Achievement.
