Awarded the Prešeren Prize, 1961

The Prešeren Prize (Slovenian: Prešernova nagrada ), named after the Slovenian poet France Prešeren , is the highest national award for culture in the state of Slovenia ; it is also called the Grand Prešeren Prize .

Since 1947 , the Prešeren Prize has been awarded annually on February 8 , the so-called Prešeren Day or cultural holiday, which is an official holiday in Slovenia , to up to two outstanding Slovenian artists. The limitation to a maximum of two award winners has only existed since 1992, and until 1962 personalities from science could also be honored. The jury is made up of representatives of various artistic genres, nominated by the government and elected by parliament. The prize is endowed with 17,900 euros.

Also on the cultural holiday, the Prešeren Foundation , which is based at the Ministry of Culture, awards a prize worth 5,900 euros to up to six artists, the so-called Prešeren Foundation (Slovenian: Nagrade Prešernovega sklada ).
