Curtea Veche Church

The Church Curtea Veche ( Roman . Biserica Curtea Veche , also called Sankt Antonius, Annunciation Church or Old Court Church) is the oldest surviving structure in Bucharest .

history

The three-icon complex was donated by Mircea Ciobanul after 1545 and completed after the donor's death. In the beginning it served as a chapel for the neighboring Curtea Veche court , after which it is named. All the princes of Wallachia were anointed in the court church until 1842. Over time, the building was damaged several times by wars, fires and earthquakes and was rebuilt or renovated by several princes. During a restoration between 1928 and 1938, the original condition was almost restored.

Building

The building is 25 meters long and 8 meters wide. The special thing about the building are the reddish stripe ornaments and the relief-like wreath of wavy lines on the upper part of the facade. The buttresses, which were taken from Moldovan architecture, are also unusual for a church in Wallachia. Today's somewhat elongated windows in neo -Gothic style date from the 19th century.
