Curtea Veche ( German: the Old Prince's Court ), as the residence of Vlad III. Drăculea built in the 15th century , now functions as a museum in the center of the Romanian capital Bucharest .
history
In the 16th century, Mircea Ciobanul completely rebuilt the royal court after the siege of Bucharest by the Turks and then the city center was built here, surrounded by the houses of traders and craftsmen. After 1640 further construction work was carried out under Prince Matei Basarab . End of the XVII. and beginning of the XVIII. In the 19th century the palace was renovated and expanded by the princes Grigore Ghica , Gheorghe Duca , Șerban I. Cantacuzino and especially by Constantin Brâncoveanu . New buildings were built for nobles, soldiers and servants. A prison, a Turkish bath and an ice room were added. Over time, the Fürstenhof was damaged by fire, earthquakes, floods and wars.
Alexander Ypsilantis built a new prince's court in 1775 near Dealul Spirii and thus the former prince's court got its name Der Alte Fürstenhof , while the new one was called Der Neue Fürstenhof . In its current role as a museum, the ruins of Mateiu Caragiale inspired his novel Craii de Curtea-Veche . The new farm was abandoned in 1812, after a few decades. In the meantime, the old royal court had been sold at auction in 1798, during the reign of Constantin Hangerli . New buildings have been built on the ruins of the old palace. Since 1953, the old palace has been put on display as a museum with the help of archaeological excavations.
The Church of Curtea Veche is the oldest building in Bucharest.
