Alexander Ypsilantis (Dragoman)
Alexander Ypsilanti ( Greek Ἀλέξανδρος Ὑψηλάντης , Aléxandros Ypsilanti , Romanian Alexandru Ypsilanti ; 1725 - 1807 ) was a Greek-born Dragoman of the Sublime Porte , later voivode of Fürstentumer Wallachia and Moldavia .
From 1774 to 1782 and 1796 to 1797 he was governor of Wallachia , from 1786 to 1788 also of the Principality of Moldova . During the Russo-Turkish War from 1787 to 1792 he was held captive by the Austrians in Brno from 1790 to 1792 . He was executed in 1807 as a participant in the Janissary uprising.
He was the father of Konstantin Ypsilantis , from 1799 voivode of the Principality of Moldova , and grandfather of the Greek freedom fighter Alexander Ypsilantis .
