Giovanni Ferrari (born December 6, 1907 in Alessandria , † December 2, 1982 in Milan ) was an Italian football player and coach .
Career
As a player
As a midfielder, Giovanni Ferrari was one of the most successful football players in Italy.
He first played in the early 1920s until 1930 for his hometown club US Alessandria and then moved to Juventus Turin , where he was under contract until 1935. At Juve he was part of the legendary Quinquennio d'Oro team and won five Italian championships between 1931 and 1935 .
As Juve poker players he won with the Italian national football team , the 1934 FIFA World Cup and could this success at the 1938 FIFA World Cup even repeat, this time as a player of Inter Milan . At the 1934 World Cup, he scored two goals. He scored in the round of 16 against the USA and in the quarter-finals against Spain .
After a season with FC Bologna in 1940 , he ended his active career again with Juventus Turin in 1942. In his long career he was Italian champion eight times (5 × with Juve , 2 × with Inter and 1 × with Bologna). In total, he scored 171 goals in 427 league games, including 112 goals in 316 Seria A games. In the national team of Italy he was active in 44 games and scored 14 goals.
As a trainer
After his playing career, he first trained in the season 1941/42 Juventus Turin. After the war break he started at Brescia Calcio in 1945 . From 1948 to 1950 he was a football teacher at AC Prato , and in 1951 at Calcio Padova .
From December 13, 1958 to November 29, 1959 he was responsible for the Italian national soccer team , after which his predecessor Giuseppe Viani took over the team for three games. From December 10, 1960 to November 4, 1961, he was again solely responsible for the fate of the Azzurri , then together with Paolo Mazza . The 1962 World Cup in Chile , which culminated in the Battle of Santiago , coincided with Mazza . After the World Cup, he and Mazza were replaced by Edmondo Fabbri .
