Azeglio Vicini (born March 20, 1933 in Cesena , † January 30, 2018 in Brescia ) was an Italian football player and coach .
He was team boss of the Italian national team during the European Football Championship in 1988 and the 1990 World Cup .
Career
Vicini was the youngest of five children in a poor family in Cesena. In addition to his studies, he worked as a carpenter. From 1952 he played for AC Cesena and from 1958 for Sampdoria Genoa , where he was repositioned from attacking midfielder to defensive player. In 1965 he moved to Serie B in Brescia . Two years later he took over the club as a coach. In 1969 he moved to the association and in 1975 he was the coach of the Italian U-23, which appeared as the U-21 national team from 1977 . In 1986 Vicini was with her Vice European Champion .
In August 1986, after the 1986 World Cup , Azeglio Vicini took over the Italian senior team as the successor to Enzo Bearzot . His first international game as team boss took place on October 8, 1986 against Greece (2-0). With the Italian team , Vicini was eliminated from the 1988 European Football Championship in Germany against the USSR in the semi-finals. At the 1990 World Cup in his own country, he was able to achieve third place with his team . 1991 Vicini resigned after the failure of Italy to qualify for the European Championship in Sweden . He was succeeded by Arrigo Sacchi . In the 1992/93 season he coached AC Cesena for a short time in Serie B and in 1993/94 Udinese Calcio in Serie A , before later taking over the chairmanship of the Italian coaching association.
