Roberto Mancini (born November 27, 1964 in Jesi ) is a former Italian football player and today's coach . He has been the coach of the Italian national team since May 2018 .

Player career

societies

The striker Roberto Mancini started his professional career in 1981 with FC Bologna , for whom he played 30 Serie A games in his first season and scored nine goals. Between 1982 and 1997 he played for Sampdoria Genoa , where he and his congenial strike partner Gianluca Vialli made a significant contribution to making these years the most successful in the club's history. Mancini made 424 league appearances for Genoa and scored 132 goals. He won the Italian Cup four times with Sampdoria and in 1991 he led the club to its only Italian championship to date. In addition, Genoa won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Mancini in 1990 and two years later reached the final of the European Cup , where the team only had to admit defeat to FC Barcelona in extra time .

After 15 years in Genoa, Mancini moved to Lazio Rome for three years in 1997 , where he played 87 league games and scored 15 goals. With Lazio he was Italian champion in 2000, cup winners twice (1998 and 2000) and again won the European Cup Winners' Cup in its last edition in 1999 as well as the European Supercup .

In the summer of 2000 he became assistant to coach Sven-Göran Eriksson at Lazio and in January 2001 he moved again as a player to the English club Leicester City , where he only stayed for a month.

National team

In the Italian national team Mancini could never really assert himself. Between 1984 and 1994 he played 36 times in the national jersey, scored four goals and took part in the 1988 European Soccer Championship in Germany and the 1990 World Cup in Italy. After a dispute with coach Arrigo Sacchi in the run-up to the 1994 World Cup , he ended his national team career.

Coaching career

Immediately after the end of his active career, Mancini took over as head coach of the Italian first division club Fiorentina in February 2001 , which he led to win the Italian Cup in the same year. After retiring from Fiorentina in January 2002, he became coach of Lazio Rome in July 2002 , where he stayed for two years and crowned his work with the 2004 Cup. He was also able to qualify the team for the Champions League, but the end came in the preliminary round.

From 2004 to 2008 Mancini coached Inter Milan and won the Italian Cup and the Italian Supercup in his first season. In 2005/06, Inter Milan was subsequently awarded the championship title, as Juventus Turin and AC Milan received point deductions due to the manipulation scandal. This made the double perfect, because the cup victory could be repeated. In 2006/07 Inter Milan won the Italian championship again. On March 12, 2008 Mancini announced his resignation at the end of the season, which he revoked a day later, with the intention of fulfilling his contract by 2012. On May 29, 2008 Mancini was dismissed despite the recently won third championship title in a row after increasing differences with players and coaches.

On December 19, 2009 he took over the coaching post at Manchester City in the English Premier League as the successor to the dismissed Mark Hughes . In 2011 he won the English Cup with his team. The following season he fixed the English championship with Manchester City on the last day of the game. After he had not defended the championship title with Manchester City, had finished bottom of the group in the Champions League and had also lost the FA Cup final against Wigan Athletic , Mancini was sacked by the club's management on May 13, 2013.

On September 30, 2013, he signed a three-year contract with Turkish record champions Galatasaray Istanbul, which was terminated in June 2014.

From November 2014 he was again the head coach of Inter Milan. He replaced Walter Mazzarri . He was released on August 8, 2016. In June 2017 he was signed by Zenit St. Petersburg . In May 2018, the collaboration between Mancini and Zenit ended.

In May 2018, the Italian Football Association signed Mancini as the new head coach of the Italian national team .
