history

Jesi was founded by the Umbrian people and later conquered by the Etruscans . After the Battle of Sentinum , the Romans won in 295 BC. The sovereignty over place and region. At that time the community was called Aesis. After the end of the Western Roman Empire , Jesi initially belonged to the Eastern Roman Empire . 756 Jesi was donated along with other cities of the church, a status that in the year 800 at the coronation of Charlemagne was reversed. From now on, Jesi was part of the newly created county of Marche. 999 transferred Emperor Otto III. Jesi back to the church. During this time the feudal structure of the place began to develop. During the 11th century the place was re-fortified. The construction of the cathedral, the palace of the city administration and the writing of the local constitution also fell during this period.

In 1194 the future Emperor Friedrich II was born in Jesi, who subsequently gave the place the status of an imperial city . As a result, the fate of Jesi remained closely linked to that of the Hohenstaufen family , especially Friedrich's sons Enzio and Manfred . After the end of the Hohenstaufen the fate of the place was influenced by the families Malatesta , Braccio da Montone and Sforza , until finally in 1447 Francesco Sforza sold Jesi to the Pope and with it the Papal States. During this eventful time, Jesi experienced a general economic decline.

The painter Lorenzo Lotto stands, among others, for the revitalization of the city. He created important works of art for several churches in Jesi. One of the first editions of the Divine Comedy was printed in Jesi in 1472 , and the expansion of the city also took off at this time. From around 1500 local landowners took over the government of the place, which lasted until the end of the 18th century - until the troops of Napoleon ended this situation in 1797 . Also in the 18th century, two other important sons of the city were born, the musicians Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and Gaspare Spontini . After 1808, Jesi became one of the main towns in the Metauro district .

In 1815, after the end of the Napoleonic Wars , a non-ecclesiastical, bourgeois community developed in Jesi. Industrialization began at this time. The beginning of the movement to create an Italian nation was also echoed in Jesi. The Marchese Antonio Colocci, originally from Jesi, was elected to the constituent assembly of the Roman Republic for the province of Ancona in 1849 - and after unification, in 1860, as Italian senator. In the same year Italian troops drove the last units of the Pope from Jesi; since then the city has belonged to Italy.
