The zone includes 25 municipalities in the provinces of Ancona and Macerata . The core area near the Esino river , whose wines are allowed to carry the addition of Classico , includes the municipalities of Apiro , Belvedere Ostrense , Castelbellino , Castelplanio , Cupramontana , Maiolati Spontini , Mergo , Montecarotto , Monte Roberto , Morro d'Alba , Poggio San Marcello , Rosora , San Marcello , San Paolo di Jesi , Serra de 'Conti , Staffolo and parts of Arcevia and Serra San Quirico ; the enlarged zone also includes municipalities north of the Misa River, namely Barbara , Trecastelli , Castelleone di Suasa , Corinaldo , Ostra and Ostra Vetere . The vineyards are located at an altitude of 75 to 550  m slm. In the north, the Lacrima di Morro d'Alba wine-growing region adjoins.

generation

The Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is at least 85% of the grape Verdicchio produced. A maximum of 15% of other white grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Marche region may be added (individually or together). In 2017, 112,107 hl of DOC wine were produced. The yields are low; the maximum yield is limited to 15 tons of grape material per hectare. Today, Verdicchio wines are usually fermented without the skin of the grapes in temperature-controlled containers. The wine then remains in tanks for about 6 to 12 months before it is marketed. The wine should be drunk young.

The following types of wine are produced:

  • Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi
  • Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Spumante
  • Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Passito - must not be marketed before December 1st of the year following the harvest year.
  • Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico
  • Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore .

description

According to the denomination:

  • Color: light straw yellow
  • Smell: delicate, characteristic
  • Taste: dry, harmonious, with a pleasantly bitter aftertaste
  • Alcohol content: 11.5% by volume
  • Acidity : 4.5 g / l
  • Dry extract: at least 14.0 g / l

Passito wines are also produced on a small scale ; These are dessert wines based on partially rosinated grapes. The resulting wine has at least 12.0  % by volume , with a remainder of at least 3.0% potential alcohol content.

In 1950, the then largest winery of the appellation, Fazi Battaglia in Castelplanio, introduced the typical green bottle in the form of an amphora . This marketing strategy initially helped the wine to become well known, but subsequently also to a somewhat kitschy and cheap image. In the meantime, Verdicchio is again often offered in classic bottles.
