Verdicchio di Matelica
Verdicchio di Matelica is an Italian white and sparkling wine from the area west of Ancona , Marche . It has had the status of a protected designation of origin Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) since 1967 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014. Some wines are also produced according to the production regulations of the more stringent DOCG apellation and have been called Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva since 1995 .
Growing area
The zone includes the same churches for both denominations:
- in the province of Macerata : Camerino , Castelraimondo , Cerreto d'Esi , Esanatoglia , Gagliole , Pioraco and Matelica
- in the province of Ancona : here parts of the municipal areas of Cerreto d'Esi and Fabriano
Most of the vineyards are located on south-west slopes on the Esino River . The vineyards are located in the mountainous hinterland on the slopes of the Apennines .
Manufacturing
The wine is about 85 to 100% from the grape Verdicchio grapes. 0-15% of other white grape varieties that are permitted for cultivation in the Marche region may be added . The yields are low, the maximum yield is limited. Today, Verdicchio wines are usually fermented without the skin of the grapes in temperature-controlled containers. The wine then remains in tanks for about six months before it is marketed. The wine should be drunk young. In addition to the white wine, a sparkling wine ("Verdicchio di Matelica Spumante ") and a sweet wine ("Verdicchio di Matelica Passito ") are also produced. The Passito must be stored at least until December 1st of the following year before it can be marketed. In 2016, 18,527 hl of DOC wine were produced in this area of 204 ha of vineyards .
