Matelica (also Materga in the regional dialect ) is an Italian municipality (comune) with 9521 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Macerata in the Marche . The municipality is located about 36 kilometers west of Macerata and about 54 kilometers northeast of Perugia on the Esino , which has its source not far from the municipality. Matelica borders directly on the province of Ancona .

history

The founding of the city goes back to the Picener people who settled here. The area has been inhabited for more than 4000 years. The name of the city itself is believed to be of Celtic origin. In Pliny the settlement as is Matilica Matilicatis mentioned. The place has had the title Città since it was bestowed by Pope Benedict XIV in 1761.

Economy and Transport

Matelica is the seat of the Veterinary Faculty of the Camerino University . At the same time, the municipality is part of the wine-growing region from which the Verdicchio (DOC) comes.

The Strada Statale 256 Muccese runs through the municipality from Muccia to Fabriano . There is also a train station on the route from Civitanova Marche to Fabriano.
