Visso is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 1032 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Macerata in the Marche and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The most beautiful places in Italy).

geography

The municipality of Visso is located about 50.5 kilometers southwest of Macerata on the Nera in the Monti Sibillini National Park , belongs to the Comunità montana di Camerino and borders directly on the province of Perugia ( Umbria ).

history

The place is a Sabine foundation, which the Romans called Vicus Elacensis . In 575/576 the village was taken over by the Lombards and assigned to the Duke of Spoleto. After the Congress of Vienna Visso belonged to the Papal States and was given the rank of a city.

On October 26th and 30th, 2016, Visso was hit by strong earthquakes .
