Civitanova Marche is a central Italian city and with 42,524 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) the most populous city in the province of Macerata in the Marche region . The inhabitants call themselves Civitanovesi .
geography
The city is located in central Italy on the Adriatic coast . On the southern outskirts of the city, the Chienti River flows into the sea. Ancona is about 50 km north, the provincial capital Macerata about 25 km west. The neighboring municipalities are Montecosaro , Porto Sant'Elpidio (FM), Potenza Picena and Sant'Elpidio a Mare (FM).
history
Italy was divided into 11 regions under Emperor Augustus in AD 8. In the so-called 5th “Regio”, north of the mouth of the Cluentum River, today's Chienti, was Cluana, today's Civitanova. Civitanova had a very lively trading activity between the 4th and 5th centuries. The small town adopted feudalism under the Franks .
In the course of the 14th and 15th centuries one had to protect oneself from many dangers: from quarrels among the most powerful and richest families and groups, but above all from the Turks. The Marches had become the scene of battles between the Church, the Malatesta family from Rimini and other families (such as the Sforza from Milan ). Therefore, a new wall was built in 1440 to protect the city. Under Pope Pius II , a castle was built at the port in 1475 with the aim of preparing for an attack from the sea.
In the 17th century the city was embellished with a new square and the construction of the Church of St. Paul. Napoleon also left many traces of his rule (Villa Eugenia). The French were later replaced by the Austrians, whose power lasted until the unification of Italy in 1861.
