Annibale Caro (born June 19, 1507 in Civitanova Marche , Marken , † November 21, 1566 in Rome ) was an Italian poet.

Life

Annibale Caro was born in 1507 to poor parents in Civitanova in the Marche region. After finishing school and studying, he worked as a teacher in the house of the wealthy Florentine Ludovico Gaddi . After a while, Caro moved to Cardinal Giovanni Gaddi , a brother of his previous employer, as secretary . Caro went to Rome with Cardinal Gaddi and ran his business so well that he was rewarded with several lucrative benefices . This income helped Caro to lead a carefree life and to interact with the most important scholars and writers in Rome.

Cardinal Gaddi died in 1543 and Caro moved to the service of Pier Luigi Farnese , who two years later became Duke of Parma and Piacenza . Initially still working in administration, Caro was soon on the way in political-diplomatic missions; u. a. to Emperor Karl V. When Caro's employer was murdered in 1547, he worked on the same mission for Cardinal Ranuccio Farnese , but after a short time switched to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese , whom he also served as secretary. Annibale Caro died in Rome on November 21, 1566 at the age of 59. He is buried in the church of San Lorenzo in Damaso .

reception

Caro is no longer one of the most famous writers in Italy, but his literary work was once counted among the classics - solely because of the language and style. The Tuscan language in particular found broad expression in Caro's works, despite a dispute with Lodovico Castelvetro .

His sense of humor was almost proverbial, too. a. on his treatise Diceria de 'nasi (on a friend's nose) and La Ficheide del P. Siceo col comento di Ser Agresto , with which Caro commented on the work Capitolo de' Fichi by the writer Francesco Maria Molza . These two works were also the only ones published during Caro's lifetime.

No less well known was Caros Aeneis , a translation of Virgil's work in rhyming verse. Of his own works, the sonnets received the greatest recognition from audiences and critics.
