Ranuccio Farnese (born August 11, 1530 in Valentano , † October 29, 1565 in Parma ) was an Italian Roman Catholic cardinal from the Farnese family .

Life

He was the grandson of Pope Paul III , who also came from the Farnese family . and the brother of Alessandro Farnese , who was also a cardinal and was called the Great Cardinal ; on the other hand, Ranuccio cardenalino ("little cardinal") was called because he had been appointed cardinal by his grandfather at the age of 15. At the age of ten he was the Prior of Venice of the Sovereign Order of Malta for life . As such, he was portrayed by Titian at the age of twelve .

During his time as Cardinal Deacon of Santa Lucia in Silice , to whom his grandfather had created him on December 16, 1545, he was known as a great patron and was highly regarded for his righteousness. His joint foundations with his brother Alessandro enabled the construction of the Santissimo Crocifisso oratory . Charles Borromeo praised him for his wisdom and charity. In 1544 Ranuccio took up residence in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome , which was still under construction . On October 8, 1546 he moved to the titular diaconia Sant'Angelo in Pescheria . On the same day he was appointed administrator (until he reached the canonical age) of the titular patriarchate of Constantinople , which he gave up on March 19, 1550. On February 12, 1547 he was appointed major penitentiary and on March 25 of the same year as archpriest of the Lateran Basilica. The latter two positions he held until his death. On February 7, 1565, he was finally raised to Cardinal Bishop of Sabina .

He died of a malignant fever in Parma at the age of 35 and was buried in the Lateran Basilica in Rome , where his grave monument is located (Fig.) . On a date that is no longer known, his bones were transferred to the church of Ss. Giacomo e Cristoforo reburied on the island of Bisentina in Lake Bolsena , where the Farnese family burial was located.
