The Lake Bolsena (Italian Lago di Bolsena , Latin Lacus Volsiniensis ) is a lake in Central Italy . It is located about 90 km north of Rome in the province of Viterbo in the north of the Lazio region near the border with Umbria and Tuscany . The lake was named after the town of Bolsena on the north bank.

geography

Lake Bolsena is an almost circular lake with an area of 114 km² and around 43 km in circumference, which is surrounded by the Volsiner Mountains . Its surface is 305 m above sea level, the greatest depth is about 151 m, the average depth about 81 m.

The lake is located in the formerly volcanically active zone of the so-called Apparato Vulsinio . It fills a caldera that was formed an estimated 300,000 years ago by the collapse of underground magma chambers following strong, explosive volcanic eruptions .

The lake is fed exclusively by rainwater and groundwater, its only outflow is the Marta river , which leaves the lake at the town of the same name on the south bank and flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea . It therefore takes almost 120 years until the lake has theoretically exchanged its water. The Bolsena lake still has a very good water quality, which enables visibility depths of up to 10 meters. The black, coarse-grained sand interspersed with tuff particles on the lake shores indicates the volcanic origin.

There are two small islands in the lake: Isola Bisentina and Isola Martana . There are several historical buildings on Isola Bisentina: the island was owned by the Farnese family for centuries and was the summer residence of many popes. The Ostrogoth Queen Amalasuntha is said to have been held captive by her cousin and co-regent Theodahad in the 6th century on Isola Martana and was finally murdered.

On the shores of the lake are the towns of Bolsena , Montefiascone , Marta , Capodimonte , Gradoli , Grotte di Castro and San Lorenzo Nuovo (clockwise) . In the vicinity of the lake you will find the growing areas of the DOC wines “ Est! Est !! Est !!! "And" Aleatico di Gradoli "(see also the article Viticulture in Italy ).

In the 1990s , further bank construction was radically contained by restrictive official measures. This means that access to the lakeshore is almost unrestricted. Lake Bolsena is considered a good example of the development of gentle tourism in Italy.
