Marta is an Italian commune with 3362 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Viterbo which belongs to the Lazio region and is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Bolsena .

geography

Location of Marta in the province of Viterbo

Marta is 106 km north-west of Rome , 41 km north of Tarquinia and 22 km north-west of Viterbo on the south-west shore of Lake Bolsena . In the municipality there is the only outflow from Lake Bolsena, the Marta river , which drains the lake into the Tyrrhenian Sea . Isola Martana in Lake Bolsena belongs to the municipality . The municipality extends over a height of 260 to 430  m slm. The highest point is the Monte di Marta, which is of volcanic origin.

Marta lies in a formerly volcanically active area, the so-called Apparato Vulsinio . Lake Bolsena itself was created by the collapse of underground magma chambers. The community is located in earthquake zone 3 (little risk).

The neighboring municipalities are Montefiascone , Viterbo , Tuscania and Capodimonte clockwise .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 726. In 787 Charlemagne gave Martha, along with other places in the region, the Patrimonium of Petri , even if the Pope did not succeed in exercising his power there. In 1261 Pope Urban IV confirmed Marta as the property of the Lords of Vico . 1354 submitted Cardinal Egidio Albornoz Marta the Papal States , and came under the control of the Bishop of Montefiascone . In 1431 the Pope gave Martha to Ranuccio Farnese for five years. The Farnese exercised the rule with short interruptions and finally incorporated Marta into the Duchy of Castro . When it was destroyed in 1649, Martha fell to the Apostolic Chamber . In 1870 Marta was incorporated into the new Kingdom of Italy .

  • Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte in the west of the village with a facade from 1485 and a fragment of the fresco of the Madonna and Child in the main altar. A procession will take place there on May 14th. A market with agricultural products, called “Le Passate” or “La Barrabata”, is then held.

economy

Tourism is an important industry. There is a modern fish hatchery in Marta to secure the basis for fishing in Lake Bolsena.

Events

In the second half of July, the Sagra del Cannaiola di Marta takes place, which is dedicated to the local red dessert wine.
