history

The area of today's Acquapendente is an old Etruscan and Roman settlement area, as can be seen from numerous artefacts in the vicinity. The place itself was mentioned for the first time in the 9th century AD in connection with a Farisa or Arisa castle on the Via Francigena . 964 the name Acquapendente (m) was the first time in a document of Kaiser Otto I. mentioned. The city name ("Hanging Water") refers to the numerous small waterfalls in the area, from which the Paglia feeds, which defines the local border between Lazio and Tuscany .

The city later belonged to Tuscany. At the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries it was part of the Siena area . From 1499 the place belonged to the Papal States .

Acquapendente was originally under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of Orvieto . After the fall of the Duchy of Castro , the bishopric was moved from Castro to Acquapendente in 1649. In 1986 the diocese was incorporated into the diocese of Viterbo . Acquapendente has been a titular bishopric since 1991 .

The city is a member of the Cittàslow , a movement founded in Italy in 1999 to slow down and increase the quality of life in cities through environmental policy, infrastructure policy, urban quality, appreciation of autochthonous products, hospitality, awareness and quality of the landscape.
