history

The name of the municipality comes from the Roman bridge Pont-Saint-Martin , which crosses the mountain stream Lys and over which all traffic rolled through the Aosta Valley for almost 2000 years. The Roman road Via Publica led over the 31 m long and 23 m high bridge from the Po plain over the little Saint Bernard to Gaul . It was still used for traffic in the 19th century.

The Roman city bridge

During the fascism , the place officially bore the Italianized name Ponte San Martino from 1929 . The renaming was reversed in 1946.

Today the place is a small industrial center in the lower Aosta Valley.
