Pont-Saint-Martin (Walser German Martinstäg ) is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 3638 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the autonomous region of Aosta Valley .

Pont-Saint-Martin lies at an altitude of 345  m slm on the orographic left side of the Dora Baltea at the entrance to the Aosta Valley , on the border with the Piedmont region . The Via Francigena runs through the village .

The neighboring communities are Carema ( TO ), Donnas and Perloz .

The name of the municipality comes from the Roman bridge Pont-Saint-Martin , which crosses the mountain stream Lys and over which all traffic rolled through the Aosta Valley for almost 2000 years. The Roman road Via Publica led over the 31 m long and 23 m high bridge from the Po plain over the little Saint Bernard to Gaul . It was still used for traffic in the 19th century.

During the fascism , the place officially bore the Italianized name Ponte San Martino from 1929 . The renaming was reversed in 1946.
