history

Today's village was already inhabited by the Focolesi that, from the Elsa Valley coming, fleeing from the Goths and Lombards refuge on the Arno studied how fonts in the Biblioteca Riccardiana show di Firenze. The name of the settlement at that time was Viniale or Vignale. To the east was the Villa'Elmo settlement. The place name probably comes from a Byzantine crypt that was built by emigrants from Lucca under the name Volto Santo or Santa Croce (holy cross). Until the 10th century, the place was nothing more than a collection of houses controlled by the Counts Cadolingi dei Borgonuovo, until Count Kadulo dei Cadolingiche established the four parishes of San Vito, San Tommaso, Sant'Andrea and San Donato. In 1240 the current patron saint of the place, Santa Cristiana, was born in Santa Croce, at that time still under the name Oringa Menabuoi . Despite its own declaration of neutrality, the place got into the conflict between Ghibellines and Guelphs and the territorial disputes between Florence, Genoa , Lucca and Pisa in the 13th century . After the defeat of Ugolino della Gherardesca in the naval battle of Meloria in 1284, he was appointed Podestà , but had to cede the towns of Santa Croce and Fucecchio, Montecalvoli and Santa Maria a Monte to Florence. Under the rule of Florence, the place, like the surrounding communities, had a certain autonomy from Florence. During this time the city wall with four towers and the two city gates (Porta guelfa towards Florence and Porta ghibellina towards Pisa) were built. The first documents mentioning the place under the name Santa Croce date from 1284. In them it is mentioned as an autonomous commune under the jurisdiction of Florence. Uguccione della Faggiola conquered Lucca in 1314 and also the area around Santa Croce, but the Pisan occupation lasted only two years. Despite the peace treaty of 1317 by Robert von Anjou , Castruccio Castracani attacked Florence several times from 1320 to 1325 and Santa Croce was again occupied by Lucca. Around 1330/33 Santa Croce voluntarily came under the protection of Florence and with these the place came to the Duchy of Tuscany until it was occupied by the Napoleonic troops in 1799 . After the French withdrew in 1814, the Ferrovia Leopolda was completed in 1847 , a railway line that led to Empoli and brought the Habsburg-Lothringians to rule until 1852. Then the place entered the Kingdom of Italy with Tuscany . Due to the territorial or provincial reform of 1925 under Mussolini , some places in the province of Pisa changed to the province of Livorno , in return the province of Pisa received the places Castelfranco di Sotto , Montopoli in Val d'Arno , Santa Maria a Monte, San Miniato and Santa Croce sull 'Arno. Today the place is one of the largest tanning centers in the world.
