Capannoli is an Italian commune in the province of Pisa in the Italian region of Tuscany with 6399 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

The place is about 25 km southeast of the provincial capital Pisa and about 50 km southwest of the regional capital Florence on the river Era and in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone D, 1 650 GR / G. The main rivers in the municipality are the Era River (8 of 55 km in the municipality) and the Torrente Roglio (9 of 28 km in the municipality). The churches of the parish are in the diocese of San Miniato , a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Florence .

The only district is Santo Pietro Belvedere (147 m, approx. 1200 inhabitants).

Capannoli borders the municipalities of Casciana Terme Lari , Palaia , Peccioli , Ponsacco , Pontedera and Terricciola .

history

The place was first mentioned between 843 and 1051 in documents of the Archdiocese of Lucca . In the Middle Ages, the Gherardesca from Pisa ruled the town , who were ousted by the Republic of Pisa (Repubblica di Pisa) in the 13th century. In 1406 the place came under the rule of Florence. Santo Pietro Belvedere was an independent municipality until 1776 and then became part of Capannoli.

Culture and sights

Since the 13th century, Capannoli was a castle of the Gherardesca family . The late Baroque Villa Bourbon del Monte , formerly Villa Baciocchi , now stands on the site of the castle . The Museo Civico Zoologico di Capannoli and the Museo Archeologico della Valdera have been located here since 1997 .

Churches

  • Chiesa di San Bartolomeo , parish church with origins in the 14th century, completely redesigned in the middle of the 19th century. Contains two chapels in the transept that date from 1860. On the right the painting Martirio di San Bartolomeo by Giovanni Stefano Marucelli (17th century), on the left L'Eucarestia (late 17th century / early 18th century).
  • Santuario della Santissima Annunziata , church with baroque style elements, which was created by the restorations of 1714. The two side altars date from 1624. The right one contains the painting Angelo custode , the left a Martirio di San Sebastiano . The campanile dates from 1837.
  • Chiesa Santi Pietro e Paolo , church in the district of Santo Pietro Belvedere, which was mentioned in 1260 and enlarged in the 17th century, today's appearance after renovation around 1958. Contains a baptismal font in white marble from 1686 and two paintings from the late 17th century ("San Gaetano" and "Crocifissione"). Today's campanile was built by Luigi Bellincioni from 1881 to 1883 on the remains of an older tower.
  • San Rocco church (oratory) at the cemetery of Santo Pietro Belvedere just north of the district. Contains a Madonna con Bambino from the environment of Benozzo Gozzoli .
