Lajatico is an Italian village with 1303 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in Tuscany in the province of Pisa near Volterra .

Location of Lajatico in the province of Pisa

The municipality is located about 50 km southwest of the regional capital Florence and about 40 km southeast of the provincial capital Pisa . In the climatic classification of Italian municipalities , Lajatico is in Zone D, 1 831 GR / G. The main town is at 205 m, the municipal area is at the lowest point at 50 and at the highest point at 628 m.

The village is located on the rivers Era (6 of 55 km in the municipality), Ragone (9 of 12 km in the municipality) and Sterza (6 of 19 km in the municipality). The Orciatico-Orendit is located near the Orciatico district .

The districts (Frazioni) include La Sterza (74 m), Orciatico (313 m) and San Giovanni (91 m).

The neighboring municipalities are Chianni , Montecatini Val di Cecina , Peccioli , Riparbella , Terricciola and Volterra .

history

Lajatico used to be called "Ajatico da Centrum", "Ajatico" and "Lajatici". In 891 the first document was signed there. In 1776 Lajatico became independent. In the 19th century the "Banca Popolare di Lajatico" was the only bank in Lajatico.

  • Chiesa di San Leonardo , church in the historic center of Lajatico. Dates from the 13th century, but was restored and changed from 1853 to 1856 by the Livornese architect Angiolo della Valle. The facade dates from 1925.

Known people and buildings

The world famous tenor Andrea Bocelli was born on September 22nd, 1958 in Lajatico. In 2006 the open-air theater Teatro del Silenzio was opened by Andrea Bocelli, in which, however, only one performance takes place annually; the rest of the year there is silence.

Lajatico lives mainly from agriculture, wine and oil production.
