history

The current municipality of Terricciola was inhabited in Etruscan and Roman times, which is attested by several grave finds ( Tomba di Nantia , Tomba di Scannicci , Tomba del Cherubino ). In the Middle Ages the village, like some of the other present-day districts (Morrona and Soiana), was fortified and in the 12th century it belonged to the territory of the Bishops of Volterra . The name Terricciola is derived from the fortification towers (Latin turris ). In 1284 the area came under the influence of Florence , but remained controversial between the two republics until the final submission of Pisa in 1406. As a reminder, the coat of arms of Terricciola shows half a Florentine lily , the other half the Pisan cross .

Culture and sights

Sights in the main town

Terricciola still shows the remains of the medieval fortifications, including a tower on the northwestern part of the former city wall. The parochial church Chiesa di San Donato is located on the highest point of the village, probably on the remains of the former keep. The church received its present form in the 19th century. Contains the work Madonna con Bambino e santi attributed to Antonio Domenico Bamberini on the rear of the facade and a Flagellazione di Cristo in the chapel Cappella del Santissimo Sacramento (17th century). The baptismal font dates from 1807, the painting of the sacristy (Madonna con Bambino) from 1409. The Villa Gherardi del Testa at the entrance to the village was built in the second half of the 17th century as a country residence for the noble Pisan family. The Oratorio della Compagnia della Santissima Annunziata is located a few meters outside the former city walls on Via Roma.
