Buti is an Italian commune in the province of Pisa in the Tuscany region with 5598 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location of Buti in the province of Pisa

The municipality of Buti is located about 30 km east of the provincial capital Pisa and about 60 km west of the regional capital Florence in a basin on the eastern slopes of Monte Pisano and southeast of Monte Serra in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone D, 1 674 GG. The river Rio Magno runs through the village .

It consists of the districts Buti (main town, approx. 2100 inhabitants) and Cascine-Le Croce (21  m , approx. 3300 inhabitants).

The neighboring municipalities are Bientina , Calci , Capannori ( LU ) and Vicopisano .

history

Buti is of Roman origin. The place was first mentioned in writing in the Middle Ages around the year 1000. For a long time it was at the center of the disputes between Pisa, Lucca and Florence and was destroyed several times. There were numerous fortifications in the area, of which Castel Tonini is still preserved today.

  • The medieval fortress Castel Tonini rises above the village , inside which is the old town with many palaces from the 16th and 17th centuries. The frescoed Palazzo Tonini (Villa Medicea), which was built by the Medici around 1550, is important.
  • Castel di Nocco was built in the 14th century by Nocco Bonfigli between the heights of Monte Roccali and Monte d'Oro .
  • Castel Sant'Agata (or Monte d'Oro ), castle ruins on the Monte d'Oro mountain , which were probably already in ruins in the 12th century after a dispute between Pisa and Lucca.

  • San Giovanni Battista , Pieve mentioned in 1276 is of older origin. Was changed significantly in the 20th century by R. Zocchi. Contains frescoes by Pietro Giarrè (18th century) and the wooden sculpture Madonna con bambino , also called Madonna del Monte , made in 1369.

  • San Nicola Vescovo , also called San Nicolao a Pontaccolle , church in the town center, which was built in 1635.
  • Chiesa dell'Ascensione , also called Santa Maria in Valleverde or Valle Verde , Maria ad Nives or Maria della Neve , church in Panicale. Made in the 11th / 12th Century as part of the Castello di Panicale.
  • Santo Stefano , church in the Cascine di Buti district. Was built in 1823, the church tower was only built in 1915.

theatre

The Francesco di Bartolo Theater dates back to 1842. It is an original miniature replica of a typical Italian theater of the time (for example La Scala in Milan ), with 25 boxes in two rows and 220 seats. It was used to entertain the local nobility in the 19th century and was reopened in 1987 after a long period of closure and renovation work. In addition to modern forms, the theater cultivates the traditional folk theater of the area, the “Maggio”.

In the past, Buti was known for the tradition of basket weaving . Today, the municipality is primarily a center for the production of high-quality olive oil , which has a centuries-old tradition here, as evidenced by many oil mills. In addition, thanks to the beautiful surroundings of the place, tourism has gained great importance.
