Monte Pisano (or pl .: Monti Pisani , Pisan Mountains) is the name of a range of hills in the Italian region of Tuscany .

Geologically, the range of hills represents an extension of the Apuan Alps , which extends from north-west to south-east between the Arno and Serchio rivers. The Monte Pisano separates the cities of Pisa and Lucca . It should not be confused with the landscape called Colline Pisane (Pisan Hills) in the part of the province of Pisa south of the Arno valley .

The Monte San Giuliano, which is part of the Pisan Mountains, was addressed by Dante in his work (cf. Leeck, 2007). The highest point is the Monte Serra with 917 m. The rock Verrucano is named after Monte Verruca (537 m) .

Between September 24 and 27, 2018, a total of five forest fires raged on Monte Pisano. The largest forest fire on the highest peak, Monte Serra, destroyed around 1400 hectares of forest and several houses in the village of Montemagno ( Calci ). The fire was probably started deliberately. Other villages in the range of hills - such as Avane ( Vecchiano ) and Lugnano ( Vicopisano ) - were also victims of forest fires.
