The Monte Serra is a mountain in the range of hills of the Monti Pisani in the Italian region of Tuscany . It is located in the territories of the Province of Pisa and the Province of Lucca .

location

The Monte Serra, formed in the Carboniferous Period , is located approx. 20 km northeast of Pisa , approx. 20 km south of Lucca and approx. 70 km west of Florence . At 917 m it is the highest point in the province of Pisa and is part of the Monti Pisani .

Aviation accident

On March 3rd, 1977 a tragic accident occurred. A Lockheed C-130H (Vega 10) transport aircraft belonging to the 46ª Brigata Aerea of the Italian military stationed at Pisa Airport flew into Monte Serra shortly after take-off in poor visibility. In addition to the five crew members, a naval officer and 38 officer cadets from the Accademia Navale were killed. A memorial on the Monte Serra commemorates the accident.

Transmitter

The transmission systems of the basic network transmitter Monte Serra are located on the summit of Monte Serra and the neighboring hills . This supplies large parts of Tuscany and Latium . The transmitters can also be received on the island of Elba and exposed locations in Corsica .
