The Pisa airport ( ital. Aeroporto Galileo Galilei or San Giusto ) is an Italian airport at Pisa . It is the most important airport in the Tuscany region and is also of great importance for the capital Florence , as the relatively small Peretola airport there could only be expanded to a very limited extent.

Location and transport links

The airport named after Galileo Galilei is two kilometers south of the city.

  • Bahn : Since March 2017 connects people mover (Pisa mover) from the airport to the central station of Pisa. The 1,785 meter long route, with a stop at the parking lot, is covered in just under five minutes. The trains, each with three cabins and a capacity of 103 people, run every five minutes.

history

A first airfield was established near San Giusto in 1911. During the First World War and in the years after, there was a military flight school here . Shortly after the war, the German Dornier-Werke, together with some business people from Pisa, took over the closed Gallinari shipyard in Marina di Pisa and founded the company CMASA - Costruzioni Meccaniche Aeronautiche SA, which sold Dornier Wal- type flying boats there until 1931, circumventing the Versailles Treaty built. In 1931 Fiat took over the production facilities. At that time, the Piaggio company settled in nearby Pontedera , where it first built aircraft engines and then aircraft. In 1938 the San Giusto airport was expanded. During the Second World War , a bomber squadron of the Italian Air Force operated from here, which is still stationed in Pisa-San Giusto today as an air transport unit. From 1948 on, the civil service could be resumed here. The passenger terminal opened in 1966 has been modernized several times over the years.

The airport had a train station until the end of 2013, from which trains to Pisa and Florence ran. The station was rebuilt and reopened in March 2017 with a new concept (people mover ). The South Tyrolean Leitner AG built a so-called MiniMetro with the companies Condotte d'Aqua, Agudio and Inso Sistemi .

Military part

The largest air transport unit of the Italian Air Force is stationed at Pisa airport ; she uses machines like the Lockheed C-130 and Alenia C-27 .
