The Frosinone military airfield is located in the Italian region of Lazio , about 80 kilometers southeast of Rome and about two kilometers west of the provincial capital Frosinone . Here is the Italian air force helicopter - Pilots from. The airfield is also open to a limited extent for general aviation .

history

The former makeshift airfield was expanded into a military airfield from December 1936 to March 1939 and then mainly used for training purposes. A transport flying school established here at the end of 1946 moved to Latina in 1955 . On February 1, 1953, the helicopter flight school of the Italian Air Force was established on the Rome-Urbe airfield . On April 2, 1955, the school moved to Frosinone with its Agusta-Bell AB 47G / J. From 1962 to 1988 she also used the AB 204B , which over the years was repeatedly used as a rescue helicopter on behalf of civilian agencies. In 1985 the school was given the new name “72. Squadron "( 72º Stormo ). In this year, the AB 47 and AB 204 were also retired . The MD Helicopters MD 500E were to replace them. 50 units were built under the designation NH 500E by the Italian company Breda Nardi ( taken over by Agusta in 1989 ) under license for the Italian Air Force and from May 1990, most of them were delivered to the 72nd helicopter squadron in Frosinone. As part of the retrofitting, the airfield was also modernized, including a new control tower.

education

Frosinone is the training center for aspiring helicopter pilots from the Italian armed forces , police and other authorities. Army and naval aviation pilots begin their aviation careers on the NH 500E before they are retrained in their armed forces on their operational model. The flight school, which has been based on the military airfield for over 50 years, played a major role in building the helicopter squadrons of various other government organizations. In Frosinone, helicopter pilots are also trained on behalf of foreign armed forces and authorities. The NH 500E can be equipped with unguided air-to-surface missiles and in this form serve as light combat support helicopters. Training and missions in Combat Search and Rescue are part of the tasks of the 72nd Squadron.
