Agusta was the abbreviation for the company founded in 1907 as Societa Costruzioni Aeronautiche Giovanni Agusta in Cascina Costa ( VA ) in Italy by the aircraft pioneer Giovanni Agusta ; later the company concentrated on the manufacture of helicopters , from 2000 under the AgustaWestland brand . Operating under Leonardo today , it was the oldest Italian aircraft factory until it was taken over.

From 1908 Agusta built aircraft, in addition to military aircraft, sport and travel aircraft. Giovanni Agusta's sons Domenico, Vincenzo, Mario and Corrado expanded the company and began manufacturing motorcycles. After World War II and Allied control, initially only road vehicles were allowed. Domenico Agusta, finally founded the motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta in 1945 . Since 1952 Agusta has been manufacturing helicopters under license from the US company Bell Helicopter . As a result, Agusta worked closely with the helicopter division of Boeing and Sikorsky Aircraft . Two years later, Agusta developed the first Italian helicopter.

In 1983 Agusta took over the Italian aircraft competitor SIAI-Marchetti . In 1994 the company was taken over by Finmeccanica (now Leonardo) from the state-owned holding company EFIM , the aircraft activities were moved to other subsidiaries of the Finmeccanica group and Agusta became a pure helicopter manufacturer. In July 2000, Agusta merged with the British Westland Helicopters to form AgustaWestland. On May 26, 2004, Finmeccanica finally took over 100% of the former joint venture . On January 1, 2016, Agusta-Westland merged with other group companies in Finmeccanica, which was renamed Leonardo SpA on January 1, 2017. Leonardo is currently the world's second largest manufacturer of civil helicopters after Airbus Helicopters .
