The Agusta A.106 was a small single-seat ASW - helicopter .

history

The anti-submarine helicopter was developed due to the demand of the Italian Navy for a helicopter model that could also be used by smaller ships such as frigates with their limited space. In addition to the location technology, two Mk-44 torpedoes should be carried along. For submarine tracking and hunting, use in poor weather conditions had to be possible. Agusta was able to fall back on experience with the light helicopters A.103 , A.104 and A.105 for the development .

The prototype first flew in November 1965. Production for the Italian Navy began in 1968. Two prototypes and five production helicopters had been ordered, the latter being canceled in 1973.

In addition to fighting submarines, the A106 could be used for close air support , with appropriate armament, in the army, as well as light transport tasks.

description

The A106 is a small single-seat helicopter with a tail rotor design. A Turboméca- Agusta TAA 230 shaft turbine with 220 kW drove a two-blade main rotor and a two-blade tail rotor . The light metal rotor blades could be folded up. The electronic stabilization system came from Ferranti and enabled hovering even in difficult weather conditions - an important requirement for the UAW operation. The standard skid running gear could be replaced by a wheel running gear. There were also emergency floats. The two MK-44 torpedoes were attached between the runners under the fuselage. Fuel could also be carried externally.
