The AgustaWestland AW139 is a in Italy and, since November 2012, in Russia produced helicopter company AgustaWestland .

development

It is a twin-engine, 15-seat medium-sized helicopter. It was jointly developed in the 1990s by the Italian manufacturer Agusta and the US manufacturer Bell Helicopter under the name AB139 . After Bell left, Agusta continued the project under the name AgustaWestland AW139 after the merger with the English company Westland .

The first flight of the AW139 prototype took place on February 3, 2001 in Vergiate , northern Italy , the first series machine flew on June 24, 2004, the first machine was delivered a year later. By the end of 2008, over 430 orders (around 200 shipped) had been received from more than 40 countries. An optional de-icing system has been available since May 2010.

The original version developed jointly by Agusta and Bell. 54 pieces were built.

AW139

AW139 is the name from the 55th machine onwards that continued to be produced in Italy after Bell withdrew. The AW139 was also built in a long-nose version , which enabled the installation of avionics elements.

A military variant of the AW139 built under license by Boeing for the US Air Force, known by them as the "Gray Wolf".

AW149

A military version of the AB139, the slightly enlarged AgustaWestland AW149 (16.91 m long, 5.05 m high) is currently under development. The first twenty-minute flight of the first prototype took place on November 13, 2009. The first flight of the second prototype with the later General Electric CT7-2E1 and FADEC engines took place in 2010. The AW-149 is participating in the selection process for the procurement of 72 helicopters for the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland. The selection process should be completed by the end of 2014.

AW189

The AW189 is a further development of the AW149 and was first presented to the public in June 2011. The 18-passenger helicopter is powered by two General Electric CT7-2E1s , has an APU and is seen as a competitor to the Eurocopter EC 175 . The first flight of the prototype took place on December 21, 2011 at the AgustaWestland Cascina Costa factory near Samarate . The EASA CS 29 and FAA Part 29 approval was achieved on February 7, 2014, and the first deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2014.

technology

The AW 139 is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 C-67C shaft turbines. The main rotor consists of five rotor blades and a four- blade tail rotor takes care of torque compensation . Parts of the AW 139 are manufactured by the Polish aircraft manufacturer PZL ; the assembly of the helicopter takes place in the US state of Pennsylvania . In June 2010, a cooperation with Russian Helicopters was announced to manufacture the helicopters in the Russian city of Tomilino .
