Atlantic Airways P / f ( Faroese Atlantsflog ) is the national airline of the Faroe Islands , based in Sørvágur and based at Vágar Airport .

history

BAe 146-200 OY-CRG from Atlantic Airways

Atlantic Airways was founded on November 10, 1987. Initially, the company was partially owned by the Danish Cimber Air , but is now 100% in Faroese national ownership. Atlantic Airways' first flight took place on March 28, 1988.

At their headquarters at Vágar Airport, the necessary infrastructure had to be created with a new hangar .

In addition to international flights with initially two BAe 146-200s , Atlantic Airways has been operating domestic flights on the Faroese helicopter routes since 1994 . This helicopter service has existed since 1984 and was previously carried out by the local shipping company Strandfaraskip Landsins .

Since 1995 the company has been flying to Iceland as well as Denmark . In cooperation with Icelandair , Narsarsuaq in Greenland will also be served in the summer . The line to Aberdeen has existed since 1998 , and Oslo was added in 2002 .

The competitor Mærsk Air withdrew from the Faroe Islands in 2004, so that since November 1, 2004 Atlantic Airways was the only company that served routes to the Faroe Islands. A third BAe 146-200 was therefore purchased in the summer of that year, and later an Avro RJ100 as a fourth machine.

On May 15, 2006, the competing Faroese airline FaroeJet started operations, but stopped operating again in December of the same year due to financial problems.

In the summer of 2006, Atlantic Airways flew to the Shetland Islands for the first time with onward flights to London . Aalborg in Denmark and Stavanger in Norway were also new to the program .

Atlantic Airways has been listed on the Icelandic OMX Stock Exchange since November 14, 2007 . As a first step towards privatization , a third of the airline's share capital will initially be offered for sale.

On May 17, 2015 it was announced that Atlantic Airways will replace the two Bell 412EP helicopters with two AgustaWestland AW139s . The cost should be around 200 million crowns. The delivery took place in 2015 and 2016.

On June 9, 2015, Atlantic Airways ordered an A320-200 from Airbus . The reason given for the purchase was the increasing demand for passengers on the Vágar - Copenhagen route . The aircraft was delivered to Atlantic Airways on December 20, 2016.

Destinations

Atlantic Airways flies from Vágar airport to destinations in Scandinavia such as Aalborg, Bergen, Billund, Copenhagen, Reykjavik and also Edinburgh in Great Britain and Paris in France. Seasonal holiday destinations in southern Europe such as Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Gran Canaria are also served.

An application has been made for a route to New York, which should be started at the end of 2019.

Incidents

  • On October 10, 2006, a BAe 146-200 ( aircraft registration OY-CRG ) had an accident at Stord Airport (Norway). She was on a charter flight to Molde . When braking, the machine rolled over the end of the runway and caught fire. Of the 16 occupants, twelve were able to get to safety before the plane burned out. Among the four fatally injured was a Faroese stewardess, the other three were Norwegian workers. Several factors came together and caused the misfortune. That day it was raining and the water could not drain from the slope because there were no grooves in the asphalt. There was also a slight tailwind on landing. Unfortunately, it was not possible to brake with the spoilers as usual, as they malfunctioned. So the pilots reacted and tried to use the emergency brake to bring the aircraft to a stop. The emergency brake did not have an anti-lock braking system, which blocked the wheels and caused the aircraft to slide. As a result, the speed did not decrease quickly enough and the aircraft fell down the slope (see also Atlantic Airways flight 670 ) .
