The Agusta A101 (called AZ.101G in the initial phase ) was a development project for a transport helicopter from the Italian company Agusta . Despite a planning period of 13 years and the achievement of series production maturity, the A101 was never produced in series.

history

As early as 1958, Agusta began planning its own transport helicopter. So far, the company had mainly built and sold successful American helicopters under license . During the early planning phase, the helicopter was referred to as AZ.101G. The "Z" stood for the designer Filippo Zappata. Before the first flight, the name was simplified to A.101G. The designation A.101D claimed in some sources cannot be confirmed by contemporary sources.

Since the factory's capacities were already exhausted due to the ongoing series production, the first prototype was not completed until 1964. After further extensions of the original prototype and adjustments to the current state of the art, the model was used for testing in autumn 1968. Due to further delays, after several modifications, the machine was not ready for series production until 1971. At that time, however, it was already technically obsolete and had no market opportunities compared to the then current competing products. So Agusta stopped the project.
