AgustaWestland was an Italian manufacturer of helicopters and small aircraft. On January 1, 2016, the company was incorporated into Finmeccanica (now Leonardo ).

history

The company was formed through the equal merger of the helicopter divisions of the Italian Finmeccanica, Agusta , and the British GKN , Westland Helicopter in July 2000. On May 26, 2004, GKN confirmed that the shares in the amount of 1.06 billion pounds in Finmeccanica had been sold; since then the company has been wholly owned by Finmeccanica in Italy.

In mid-2009, as part of the 2008-2011 privatization program of the Polish Ministry of Finance, AgustaWestland took over 87.6 percent of the Polish helicopter manufacturer PZL Świdnik for a price of almost 80 million euros.

In February 2013, AgustaWestland boss Bruno Spadolini was put under house arrest in the course of investigations into suspected corruption, in which Finmeccanica boss Giuseppe Orsi was arrested, as were two other managers. As part of a far-reaching reorganization of the Finmeccanica group, AgustaWestland was absorbed into the Finmeccanica helicopter division on January 1, 2016. Finmeccanica was renamed Leonardo on January 1, 2017 .
