history
The company Bell Aircraft Corporation was founded on July 10, 1935 by Lawrence Dale Bell in Buffalo , New York State . The company was called Bell Aircraft until it was taken over by Textron in 1960. Bell Aircraft Corp. was the first company in the US to receive approval to become a helicopter manufacturer. Since then, the company has manufactured more than 35,000 helicopters, of which around 13,000 are still in service. In addition to the headquarters in Fort Worth, there are also plants in Amarillo in the US state of Texas and, since 1987, Mirabel in Canada , where the 4,000th helicopter manufactured there left the plant in January 2012. Around 200 helicopters are delivered every year. 62% of this is used for military purposes and 38% for commercial purposes. This makes the company the world's largest manufacturer of helicopters in the military sector. In the civil sector, Bell Helicopter is number two behind Airbus Helicopters . On February 22, 2018, the company renamed itself "Bell" and given itself a new logo.
helicopter
A special feature of the Bell 47 model was a fully glazed pulpit which, due to its resemblance to a “goldfish bowl”, was called a “goldfish bowl” in English.
Bell presented u. a. the UH-1 Iroquois (called "Huey"), which is still used in many armies as a combat, transport and SAR helicopter. Along with the Mil Mi-8, it is one of the most built helicopters in the world. With the components of the UH-1, the first real combat helicopter , the AH-1 Cobra, was developed in the 1960s . It already had the tandem arrangement of pilot and gunner, which is still used today, with the gunner sitting in front.
In the civil sector, the Bell 206 “JetRanger” in particular has become a familiar helicopter, while the Bell 222 (usually called the Bell “Triple Two”) functioned as a “super helicopter” in the television series “ Airwolf ”.
The Bell 525 "Relentless" was presented at the Heli Expo 2012 ; this type is said to be the largest civil helicopter from Bell Helicopter. The helicopter is in direct competition with the AgustaWestland AW189 and the Eurocopter EC 175 .
Tilt rotor aircraft
The Bell Boeing V-22 tilt rotor aircraft intended for military use is produced together with Boeing , and the BA609 tilt rotor aircraft intended for civil use is developed in a joint venture with Agusta .
Bell has been working on the Bell V-280 , a third-generation tilt rotor aircraft, since 2013 . Together with the American arms and technology group Lockheed Martin Corporation , they are developing the V-280 for the United States Army Future Vertical Lift (ATCO) program. The V-280 Valor was presented at the 2013 Army Aviation Association of America (AAAA) exhibition in Fort Worth , Texas. The first flight is planned for 2017.
