history

The Bell 525 "Relentless" was presented at the Heli Expo 2012, this type is said to be the largest civil helicopter from Bell Helicopter. The helicopter is in direct competition with the AgustaWestland AW189 and the Eurocopter EC 175 . The first flight took place on July 1, 2015 at the Amarillo plant , certification and delivery are scheduled for 2017. The unit price is around USD  22 million, depending on the equipment.

construction

The helicopter is to be controlled by means of fly-by-wire , which will be supplied by BAE Systems . The cockpit is an ARC Horizon flight deck ( A wareness, R eactive, C ontrol) and have as avionics, a Garmin G5000H provided with touch screen technology. The helicopter, equipped with a five-bladed main rotor and a four-bladed tail rotor, is powered by two General Electric CT7-2F1 engines with FADEC . Six months later than planned, the first prototype of the Bell 525 had its maiden flight on July 1, 2015. The certification process should be completed by 2017. On July 6, 2016, a Bell 525 crashed during a test flight. Both crew members died.

Incidents

On July 6, 2016, the first prototype crashed near Italy . Both crew members were killed. When simulating engine failures at high speeds, there was a sharp drop in the rotor speed. This maneuver stimulated an eigenmode of the main rotor. Additional feedback via the pilot ( PIO ) and the AHRS ultimately led to strong, upward vibrations. These became so strong that the rotor blades touched the tail boom, which subsequently broke off and led to an uncontrolled crash.
