The Bell 214ST is a medium-weight helicopter with two engines and has been developed from the popular Bell UH-1 -Huey series. Although it has the same type number as the Bell 214 , these are two differently developed models.

history

The 214ST was originally developed as a military project specifically intended for production in Iran . The development was funded by the Iranian government. The prototype first flew in Texas in February 1977, three prototypes followed in 1978.

The overthrow of the Shah in 1979 led Bell to change production plans. The 214ST was now produced in Dallas- Fort Worth and built first as a civilian, later as a military model. Production of the 214ST began in 1981. The FAA and CAA type certification for visual and instrument flight was granted in 1982. The military version was then delivered from 1982.

construction

The Bell 214ST differs significantly from the Bell 214 . The Bell 214ST has a larger stretched fuselage with space for 16 to 18 people and two GE-CT7-2A engines, each with 1,212 kW (1,625 shp). Bell introduced some groundbreaking innovations in this helicopter with the fiberglass rotor blades, the elastomer rotor head bearing and the option of choosing between runners or wheeled landing gear. The helicopter has a cockpit door and a large cabin door on each side. The 214ST has a fuel capacity of 435 US gallons (1,650 liters). Additional tanks can be used to increase the range. The 214ST model is the largest helicopter Bell has ever built. ST initially stood for "Stretched Twin", later for "Super Transport". Bell built a total of around 100 ST. Production of the 214ST ended in 1991.
