The AgustaWestland A119 and AW119 "Koala" is an eight-seat light multi-purpose helicopter with a gas turbine for the civilian market. It is the heaviest single-engine helicopter in its class and is an entry-level version of the Agusta A.109 .

development

As a cheap single-turbine helicopter, Agusta developed a stripped-down version of the A.109. The layout was adopted, but a turbine was left out. The retractable landing gear was also dispensed with and skids were used instead. The cabin is 30% larger than other helicopters in this class. The passenger cabin holds two stretchers or six passengers. The first prototype was completed in 1994. However, this was used for static tests. In February 1995, the second prototype successfully completed its maiden flight. After difficulties with the Turboméca Arriel 2K1 turbine , Agusta switched to the tried and tested Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6B turbine. After the conversion, the prototype was certified for the Italian aviation authority RAI in July 1999 and by the American FAA in February 2000 . Series production began at the Verigate plant in Italy. Denel Saab Aerostructures has set up a second production line for final assembly in Kempton, South Africa for the African market. The improved AW119Ke has been weight-optimized and received revised aerodynamics and composite rotor blades.
