The canton of Kassel was an administrative unit in the Kassel district of the Fulda department in the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia .

The main town of the canton and seat of the peace court was Kassel , the royal seat of the kingdom. The canton comprised the city of Kassel and the two "colonies" (hamlets) Philippenthal and Mommerode and had 21,538 inhabitants in an area of 0.19 square miles .

In March 1808, by decree of King Jérôme , the canton of Kassel was divided into two cantons, or courts of justice districts. The canton of the upper city included the Napleonshöher , the Frankfurter and the Carls suburbs. The canton of the Unter-Stadt included the Dutch, Weser and Leipzig suburbs as well as the hamlets of Philippenhof and Mommerode. The border between the two cantons was the middle of Hedwigstraße, Gouvernementsplatz, Johannesstraße, up to where it met the street behind the Marstall, and the middle of this street until Marstallplatz. The royal stables formed the border of the canton of the upper town, and the house of the Pedrazzino brothers that of the canton of the lower town.
