history
The airfield, originally laid out as an airship base, was built in its current form from the mid-1950s. During the Cold War , a large part of the Italian army was concentrated in northeastern Italy , where it was supposed to repel a possible attack by Warsaw Pact forces . Most of the V Corps , which among other things consisted of the Ariete Armored Division, was in Friuli-Venezia Giulia .
In Casarsa della Delizia there were parts of the corps troops of the V Corps, including the 5th Army Aviation Regiment. In the barracks, just east of the airport, much of which was Division troops of the armored division housed Ariete, at the airport itself, the Army Aviation Squadron was stationed Division. Thus Casarsa was one of the more important military locations in the lowlands in the northeast of the country during the Cold War. Here, preparations were made for the case of defense, especially at the Cellina-Meduna military training area , located a few kilometers northwest of Casarsa , which is why army aviators often flew missions there.
The history of the Army Aviation in Casarsa began in 1956 with a small helicopter unit on AB 47 , which was expanded in 1963 with new AB 204 and finally received regimental status. The 5th Regiment flew the AB 204, AB 205 and AB 206 models as well as L-19 propeller aircraft in the 1970s . Around 1990 one introduced the newer models A 109 and A 129. In 1996 the 5th Army Aviation Regiment relocated to the Campoformido military airfield located around 30 kilometers to the east , in 1998 it contributed at short notice to the establishment of the new 7th Army Aviation Regiment in Rimini and returned to Casarsa della Delizia that same year. Since 2000 it has been under the Friuli Air Mobility Brigade .
