The Venice – Udine railway connects Venice , the capital of the Veneto region , with Udine in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region . It is equipped with the train protection SCMT and is operated by RFI . The line has two tracks and is electrified with 3,000 V direct current . The Venezia Santa Lucia - Venezia Mestre section with the bridge over the Venice lagoon has been expanded to four tracks. Larger cities along the way are Mogliano Veneto, Treviso , Conegliano and Pordenone .

passenger traffic

The passenger transport services are provided by Trenitalia . Every two hours regional trains run from Venice via Udine to Trieste on a regular schedule . They only stop in the larger train stations. These trains are supplemented by regional trains, which serve all places along the route, but only run irregularly. Regional trains in the direction of Belluno and Calalzo di Cadore also use the route between Venice and Conegliano . In international long-distance passenger transport between Austria and Italy, there are only three pairs of night trains in the current timetable (2011), two of which are daily. The last pair of international trains running during the daytime was discontinued when the timetable changed in December 2009. There is also a Eurostar-Italia connection to and from Rome and a Eurostar-City-Italia connection to and from Milan once a day . A pair of InterCityNotte trains from Udine to Naples and back also runs the route. Between Venezia Mestre and Treviso , an expansion of the offer with a regular timetable and short intervals is planned; for this purpose, the new stops San Trovaso and Venezia Mestre Ospedale were opened in 2007 and 2008.

Freight transport

In freight transport, the route is mainly through international trains the relation Austria - Italy traveled, including the mixed trains from Villach South United yard to Bologna , Milan and Naples, the weekly circulating Containerzugpaar Vienna - St. Michael - Verona Quadrante Europa and the car moves from the Fiat plants in the Czech Republic in Verona, Fossacesia and Turin . Steel trains from Cittadella to the Voestalpine AG works in Linz also travel the route. In regional freight transport, mixed trains primarily use the route that goes via Udine to the Cervignano Smistamento freight station . Many of these trains leave the route again in Treviso Centrale in order to continue from there to Castelfranco Veneto and Padua or Vicenza .

Vehicle use

Push-pull trains with E.464 series locomotives and TAF electric multiple units are used in local passenger transport . The international long-distance trains are usually pulled by the series E.444 , E.402A and E.656 , in the 2009 timetable, except for the bicycle car on the EuroCity trains , which is provided by Trenitalia, only ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG cars are used . The Eurostar-Italia train pairs are formed by an ETR 460 railcar , the Eurostar-City-Italia train pair to Milan consists of a Freccia-Bianca set . The last locomotive-hauled national long-distance train to and from Rome was discontinued in 2008. E.655 , E.652 and E.412 series locomotives are primarily used in freight transport .

Since December 2013, this route has been used again by a daily EC train pair Vienna-Venice. The set consists of an ÖBB 1216 and an ÖBB long-distance car. For the timetable change in December 2017, the use of Railjet sets is also planned, which are to be equipped with multi-system locomotives.
