The E.652 series is an Italian electric locomotive series .
history
The E.652 series represents a further development of the fully electronic chopper locomotives of the E.632 and E.633 series . From 1989 to 1996, a total of 176 652s were purchased. In contrast to the E.632 and E.633 series, the E.652 series locomotives have a digital control and diagnostic system and more powerful motors that are suitable for a voltage of up to 2200 volts . Like the predecessor series, the E.652 has a resistance brake. The recovery of braking energy into the overhead line (recuperation brake) was still causing technical problems that were too great under the Italian direct current system; the rectifiers in the substations make it impossible to feed back electricity from the overhead line into the network. In addition, the Italian train protection systems (including BACC ) have very restrictive requirements for the suppression of interference frequencies, which at that time could not have been met with reasonable effort.
commitment
Class E.652 locomotives are stationed in Milan , Turin , Udine and Naples . They are mainly used in front of heavy goods trains on the Brenner Railway , the Mont-Cenis Railway and the Pontebbana from Venice to Tarvisio .
